 | Description | |
John the Baptist has come with his mother to visit his cousin, the infant Christ. He has brought a reed cross, and a scroll inscribed EC[CE] [A]GN[US DEI] ("Behold the lamb of God"), referring to Christ's future sacrifice. The subject was popular in Florence: the Baptist was the city's patron saint. The composition is indebted to Leonardo da Vinci.
