Description

The sitter wears the Maltese Cross of the Order of Saint John; the order was expelled from Rhodes in between 1522 and 1523 and established in Malta in 1530.

The date 1514 is written at the end of the letter which the sitter holds. The ledge is inscribed with the artist's monogram (twice) and with the motto: .TAR. VBLIA. CHI. BieN. EIMA. ("He who loves well is slow to forget"). The cross is of the style associated with the knights of Saint John. The artist was influenced by both Fra Bartolommeo and Andrea del Sarto.
