TOne of Raphael's earliest works, greatly influenced by Perugino, this served as the altarpiece of the side chapel in S. Domenico in Città di Castello, the stone frame of which is dated 1503.
he Virgin and Saint John the Evangelist stand on either side of the cross. More unusually, Saint Jerome and Mary Magdalene also kneel before it. Angels catch Christ's blood in chalices, similar to those used for the wine of the Mass. The predella (the tier below the main field of an altarpiece) depicted episodes from the life of Saint Jerome, to whom the altar was dedicated.
The letters I.N.R.I., so prominent in this painting, stand for "Lesus Nazarenus Rex Ludaeorum" (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews), the label which Pilate wrote to place on the cross.
The foot of the cross is scratched through to reveal silver leaf letters: RAPHAEL/ VRBIN / AS /.P.[INXIT] [Raphael of Urbino painted this].
