 | Description | |
Painted for a Sienese palace, these pictures by an unidentified painter tell Boccaccio's story of the marriage of the Marquis Gualtieri di Saluzzo and the peasant girl, Griselda.
In this first panel the Marquis encounters Griselda while out hunting (left) and announces that he will wed Griselda on the condition of her absolute obedience. Having obtained her father's permission (right background), he publicly strips her, to dress her again in her wedding finery (right). The wedding takes place in the centre.
