Description

Bernardin Saviati, an Italian canon of the church of St Donatian in Bruges, is accompanied by (from left to right) the saints Martin of Tours, Bernardino and Donatian. In the background is the beggar to whom Saint Martin gave his cloak. This is the left-hand shutter of a two-panel altarpiece commissioned by Salviati for St Donatian.

The painting may have originated as the left wing of a diptych for the altar of Saints John and Mary Magdalene there, commissioned in 1501. The right wing is probably the "Crucifixion" in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin.
