A man is shown at prayer, his devotional book resting on a turf bench. In the summer landscape behind, workmen are busy re-roofing a house. This painting was presumably the left wing of a triptych, and the unidentified man was originally addressing his prayers to a figure on the central panel, probably the Virgin and Child. The landscape is in the style of Patinir, who collaborated with Massys.
