The Land representation is situated in the diplomatic quarter on the southern fringe of Tiergarten Park. The architectural design of the new building - an ensemble consisting of two structures of differing height and cubage - springs from the contrast between the open, yet dense structure of the villa and the closed block perimeter construction frequently to be found in Berlin. It was opened on September 10th, 1999.
The guest house, rising to the customary building height in Berlin, forms the end of a closed development along the Landwehr Canal and thus acts as a prelude to the free-standing Land representation. However, both buildings stand on their own. They receive their defining formulation from the composition of their window openings, from the deep indents brought about by the loggias and the entrance, and from the atrium in the roof; in the case of the guest house also from the small balconies, which project out like sculptures, and the roof terrace.
The ground and first floors constitute an uninterrupted spatial flow leading from the entrance with the porter's lodge via the Bremen Club to the two-storey foyer that acts as an anteroom to the large hall, which opens out onto the terrace and the lower-lying garden. The front office is located above the entrance on the first floor and has a gallery opening out onto the foyer. The offices are accommodated on the upper floors. The eight-storey guest house has a number of apartments and small guest rooms, including one catering for the needs of the handicapped, and a caretaker's flat. The top floor has room for the guests of the Land representation with a terrace and a view of Berlin.
