 | Description | |
Japan had to give up its former embassy on Tiergartenstraße in 1938. By 1942, a new embassy building had been erected to plans by the architect, Ludwig Moshammer, on an alternative site. With the exception of the chancellery wing the building was almost completely destroyed by bombs in August 1944.
The Japanese government resumed its diplomatic activities in the present ambassador's residence and the chancellery wing in March 2001. Work on an extension on Hiroshimastraße began in 1998 and was finished by June 2001.
