Zuiho-in was founded by "Christian Lord", Ohtomo Sorin in 1546 as the family temple. It is one of 24 monasteries of Daitoku-ji Temple. The main hall and gate are original structures. The Garden of the Cross is dedicated to Ohtomo.
Viewed from the south-eastern corner, the hill stones are arranged to form a cross. The Garden of the Blissful Mountain (Zuiho-tei) has a large stone "mountain" in an ocean of raked sand.
