Le Conseil du Roi s'installera, en 1653, dans l'aile construite par Jacques Lemercier à partir de 1639. Cette institution disposera d'une antichambre, d'une grande pièce et d'une petite, distribuées du nord au sud. Les locaux seront attribués à l'Académie des inscriptions, au sud, et l'Académie française, au nord, entre 1781 et 1793. Les salles de l'Académie, réaménagées en 1816 par Pierre-François Léonard Fontaine, donneront naissance à cinq salles en enfilade destinées à recevoir une partie des collections du musée des Monuments français d'Alexandre Lenoir. Le nouvel espace, inauguré en 1824 portera le nom de Galerie d'Angoulême, en hommage au duc d'Angoulême, fils de Charles X et vainqueur de l'expédition d'Espagne. Les Antiquités orientales remplaceront les sculptures françaises en 1933, lorsque ces dernières quitteront la Cour Carrée pour l'aile de Flore.
