Excavated in 1678, the Pièce d'Eau des Suisses - named for the Swiss Guard who constructed the lake - occupied an area of marshes and ponds, some of which had been used to supply water for the fountains in the garden.
Description
This water feature, with a surface area of more than 15 hectares, is the second largest - after the Grand Canal - at Versailles (Marie 1972, 1975; Nolhac 1901, 1925; Thompson 2006; Verlet 1985).
