Next day, it took part in the storming of the Bastille. On 15 July, La Fayette was named as its commander. By December, all départements had established National Guards and they had formed a federation.
The National Guard played an important part in the French Revolution until it was crushed on October 5, 1795 by Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon allowed it to exist as an unarmed force and it continued to exist after the Restoration. It took part in the Revolution of 1830 and the Revolution of 1848. In 1871 it joined the uprising of the Paris Commune, and following the Commune's defeat by the French Army, it was suppressed on 14 March 1872. |
