Description
The two genres were combined in the uniquely English form called the "conversation piece"", a family portrait of modest size depicting the sitters at home or relaxing outdoors on their estate. Thomas Gainsborough brought English achievements in portraiture and landscapes to brilliant fruition at the end of the century, with lively brushwork that animates his sitters and captures the movement and textures of the countryside.
