Description
This renewed interest in classical idealization coincided with a trend -led by the painter Caravaggio (1573-1610) - toward blunt naturalism, dramatic lightning, and the use of unidealized, live models. These elements became the basis of the new Baroque style. The paintings in the gallery illustrate the range of Baroque art, from the classicizing to the naturalistic. The works share an emphasis on overt human emotion, a hallmark of the Baroque.
