Description
In the religious art of Catholic countries such as Flanders, Italy, France, and Spain, the emotionalism of the Baroque served the Counter-Reformation, which strove to stem the rise of Protestantism with deeply moving images. Depictions of martyrdoms, miraculous healings, and mystical visions were meant to reinforce the faith of Catholic viewers.
