Description
In the Ming Dynasty, it was the residence of the empress. Emperor Chongzhen once moved here to fast a penance to heaven because of frequent natural disasters. In the Qing Dynasty, it was the residence of some important imperial concubines. Concubine Donge and Concubine Ke of Emperor Shunzhi, the empress of Emperor Yongzhen and Concubine Ru of Emperor Jiaqing all lived here at some time during the Qing Dynasty. The mother of Emperor Xiaozong of the Ming Dynasty, the only emperor of the Ming and the Qing dynasties to be born in the palace, lived here for a short time. The words "Yong Shou" come from "The Analects of Confucius", meaning "pray for benevolence and longevity".
