The Netherlands - Section 05 (15)

Hieronymus Bosch's works demonstrate his accomplished mastery of oil painting, as well as his ability to evoke a sinister and fantastical world. His paintings contrast with more orthodox devotional works by his contemporaries from the Northern Netherlands, also shown here, for which there was constant demand.

Vermeer and the Delft Painters - Section 16 (16)

During the 16th century, the Protestant Reformation swept through the Low Countries with a resultant loss of interest in religious subjects for painting.

Peter Paul Rubens - Section 29 (22)

Painting in Flanders was dominated during this period by Peter Rubens who, having spent eight years in Italy, returned to Antwerp in the winter of 1608. There, he demonstrated a mastery of both the styles learned in Italy and local Flemish painting traditions.
